2. John Reeves 2 was born about 1805 in Rich Hill, Lancaster Co., South Carolina 2,3 and died on February 16, 1897 in Haralson Co., Georgia, at age 92.4

General Notes: Dora says he was named as John Robert Reeves in court cases over the Horton land.

From Carol McMichen: I have not been able to find where John Reeves b. 1805 was buried. I assume it must be an unmarked grave. Neither the Paulding Co. or Haralson Co. cemetery books have him listed.

Moved to Georgia in 1852. Dora's notes said died in Texas.

A lot of the information on the Waddells and John Reeves descendants came from Teddy Randles (teddy.randles@worldnet.att.net).

Lancaster Ledger - April 28, 1852
Fatal Affray
On Saturday last, a fatal affray occured at the mill of Mr. John Reaves, in the District. It appears that two young men by the name of Bowers, went to the mill, and while there, a difficulty took place between Reaves and Thomas Bowers, when Archibald Bowers, a brother present, dismounted from his horse and threw a stick, or a piece of sawed timber at Reaves--when Reaves got in possession of the same, and beat A. Bowers so that he died in about six hours. Reaves has since surrendered himself to the proper authorities, and is now in close confinement.--There being no animosity existing between Reaves and the deceased previous to this affair, it is presumed to be the work of ungovernable passion.
--
This may be the reason he decided to move. The supposed date of his move to Georgia was 1852, the same year.

Jonathan,
I was excited to see the information that you had posted as well and also your web site. John Reeves b. 1805 was my ggg grandfather. I have never seen the middle initial used in his name that I have seen but that does not mean it wasn't his middle initial. What was your source for the R middle initial?

My grandmother was Nell Mae Reeves, her father was John Robert Reeves Sr. and his father was James Washington Reeves and his father was John Reeves. All of this information was family record and was recorded in our family bible. I didn't know at the point that I started researching for John Reeves parents, exactly where John Reeves was from or what his wife's name was. I knew that my grandmother was from Haralson and Paulding Counties as was John Robert Reeves, James Washington Reeves. I found John Reeves born abt. 1805 SC on the census for 1860, 1870 and 1880.

I was able to get a death certificate for James Washington Reeves which gave his place of birth as Lancaster Co., SC and his father as John Reeves. His mother was not listed. I looked for Reeves in Lancaster Co., SC in the early 1800's and found a John Reeves listed in 1830, 1840 and 1850 Lancaster. He was the only John Reeves listed in Lancaster during those years. I then found information on genforum and ancestry.com regarding James Brady Reeves and his son John which matched what I had found. Also, it was recorded that John Reeves moved to Madison Co., Ga. He wasn't listed in Lancaster in 1860 nor were there any Reeves in Madison Co., Ga in 1860. He may have initially moved to Madison but then moved westward. He may have planned to continue moving westward until his wife died. She must have died in or after 1854. That's when the last child was born. She wasn't listed in 1860. By 1870, John was listed with wife Sarah.

Funny thing about Sarah. James Washington Reeves married Mary Elizabeth Morris (from my family bible). I found a Morris book that included Mary Elizabeth Morris' line. Her mother was Sarah unknown. Mary Elizabeth's father was William Hannah Morris. He died in the Civil War and his widow Sarah married John Reeves. So, my ggg grandfather of one line married my ggg grandmother of another line. In the Morris book, it says that when Sarah went for her widow's pension that she had married John Reeves and was now Sarah Reeves. Also, in 1870 the 2 younger Morris children were listed with John and Sarah Reeves.

Sarah Reeves is listed in 1910 Haralson living with William Morris. She is listed as mother 79 widowed. Living next door to William Morris is my great grandfather, John R. Reeves also widowed and children.

I have been to Allgood cemetery and taken pictures of the headstones there. Mary Francis Reeves that married Waddell is buried next to her brother James Washington Reeves. Also, at Allgood are John Robert Reeves Sr. and his 2 wives and some of their children.

I have additional information on the children of John Robert Reeves Sr. I wasn't sure how may generations you were interested in. Also, my great aunt Ruby Reeves, daughter of John Robert Reeves Sr., wrote an article on John Robert Reeves Sr. for the Haralson Co. Heritage Book.

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of pictures of the Reeves. My mom said they didn't like to have their picture made. So, I don't have a picture of my great grandfather John Robert Reeves Sr. or of his father James Washington Reeves or of John Reeves.

I have probate papers from Haralson Co. on the estate of John Reeves (b. 1805). Sarah B. Reeves is listed as his wife. His dad is listed. John Allen Reeves and William J Reeves are listed on the papers. John Allen Reeves was the administrator of the estate. He was the son of William J Reeves. The information on William J Reeves' line came from the census, Haralson Co. marriage records and Haralson Co cemetery book. Census gave that he was from SC. He and James Washington Reeves both enlisted in the Civil War in 1862 from Haralson Co., Ga. William's age and that he was from SC matched the information that I had on W son of John Reeves of Lancaster. When I found the probate papers and he and his son were listed as administrators, I knew he had to be the W son of John Reeves. I have not been able to find what happened to Johnny or Minerva or C or D. C may have stayed and married in Lancaster. She was old enough. There was a flu or smallpox epidemic around 1850 which may have taken some of the children. I was not able to find Minerva or Johnny listed in Haralson Co. marriage records. William J. Reeves d. 1919 so I was not able to get a death certificate for him. I have not been able to find where John Reeves b. 1805 was buried. I assume it must be an unmarked grave. Neither the Paulding Co. or Haralson Co. cemetery books have him listed.

On Mary Francis Reeves, I had emailed with a descendent of hers. I noticed that he was listed on genforum looking for information on my great grandfather John Robert Reeves Sr. He had the death certificate for Mary Francis which gave her father as Johnny Reeves and mother unknown. Mary Francis was listed as born in Paulding Co., Ga. on her death certificate. The descendent had been told by family that Mary Francis was buried next to her brother James Washington Reeves at Allgood. We exchanged information, so I have additional information on the descendents of Mary Francis if you want it. The descendent had been trying to find the parents of John Reeves b. 1805. I was able to fill him in.

The line between Paulding and Haralson Co. has changed at least once. So, the Reeves may not have moved, the county line may have moved.

I have not been able to get a response from descendents of William J. Reeves. I saw a listing on genforum that mentioned this line and emailed and wrote a snail mail letter but did not get a response. There are from what I can tell still descendents living in Haralson Co.

I have family tree software. I can produce a pdf file from family tree if that would help you. I would rather not give dates, etc. on living individuals.

Thank you,
Carol McMichen

John married Elizabeth Blackmon .2 Elizabeth was born about 1805 2 and died in 1854-1860, at age 49.

John married Sarah B. between 1860-1870. Sarah was born in 1832 in Georgia and died after 1910 in Haralson Co., Georgia.

General Notes: Sarah was the widow of William Hannah Morris, the father-in-law of James Washington Reeves. William Morris died in Civil war and Sarah married John Reeves.

Research Notes: marriage date from census

3. Winifred Reeves was born about 1809 in Rich Hill, Lancaster Co., South Carolina,2 died about 1869 in Probably Union Co., North Carolina, at age 60,5 and was buried in Old cemetery off Sunset Dr. in Monroe, North Carolina.2

General Notes: There is an old cemetery located off Sunset Dr. - ball field is nearby. Dora said that Sherry McLemore found the headstone in the cemetery. This is NOT the Monroe City Cemetery. Dora said that it was very old and overgrown.

Both the 1850 and 1860 censuses give age to conclude birth date as 1810. Not on 1870. But, a girl is listed with the Reeves family in 1810 (0-10) years. Assuming it was Winnie, that would put her birth date about 1809.

Winifred married William Phillip Richardson . William was born about 1799 in Anson or Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina 8,9 and died about 1875 in Union Co., North Carolina, at age 76.

General Notes: There is a Mary living with Phillip in 1870 census, age 40. This was Mary (Bailey) Starnes, daughter of James and Mary Bailey, whom William Phillip Richardson married March 7, 1869. This checks out with the death date I have for Winnie.

Named as Wm P. Richardson in his father Mason's will.

Had slaves in 1850

On Mr. Victor Harden's two pedigree charts, he has that Wm. Phillip was born in 1899.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 21 F    i. Elizabeth Richardson 17 was born on July 27, 1830 in Mecklenburg, Union Co., North Carolina 6,,17 died on December 28, 1881 in Union Co., North Carolina, at age 51 6,,17 and was buried in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery, Union Co., North Carolina 6.,17

+ 26 M    vi. Sylvester (Sylvanus) Richardson 3 was born about 1843 in North Carolina 3 and died on May 5, 1864 in Wilderness, Virginia, at age 21.
+ 27 M    vii. Israel Constantine Richardson 1 was born about 1852 in North Carolina.8
4. Elisha Reeves was born about 1810 in Rich Hill, Lancaster Co., South Carolina 2 and died after 1844.

General Notes: Dora Reeves and Charles Respass concluded that the following from the 1850 census is the wife of Elisha and their children. Neither can provide any conclusive evidence to connect up Elisha with this family. I cannot find this family on the 1860 census. The latest known documentation of Elisha was right after his father died when Elisha and Bethenia sued the rest of the family about the Reeves land. Also named in father's will from 1844. In 2008, found him in a record index book with a date of 1845.

He must have been born 1810 or after because he isn't in the 1810 census.

General Notes: Dora's notes said he only had seven children. Martha was in the 1870 census. In 1850, he had a 20 year old Male Black slave. Probaby "Morris", spoken of in his father's will.

Listed as a member in the Fork Hill Church old minutes book p. 247 no. 69 - J. B. Reeves

d. from some land transaction papers from Dora which were from after his death. Said something about the land of J. B. Reeves who died about 1892. J. B. Reeves is on the tax duplicate record Nov. 1, 1893. The 1894 record is missing. "Est. J. B. Reeves" is listed on the 1895 record (Nov. 1). It also mentions land divided among Elizabeth Ellis, J. C. James married Frances H. Sims .2 Frances was born about 1815 in South Carolina.

General Notes: The full name of Frances Ann Sims was in the information from Dora. She says it came from Sherry McLemore. Need more concluding information.
1850: F. H. Reeves
1860: Frances (H. or A.) Reeves
1870: Franky Reaves
1880: Frankey H. Reeves

d. 1885 from Sherry McLemore

In a message from P. T. Hammond of the Court of Ordinary printed March 5, 1864, "Frankey H. Reeves and husband James B. Reeves" are summoned to appear before Hammond to prove or disprove the will of Joseph Ervin Sims.

A Hawkins Reaves was listed next to James Jr. in the Fork Hill revival baptism record of 1839. Also listed in Fork Hill members list with (dead) written next to the name. On J. C.'s Death Certificate, it looks like the mother's name is Hawkins Reeves.

Research Notes: Check in to "H" being for Harwell or Hammond. Also, possibly Hawkins.

Find cemetery where brother Garrett Sims is buried. Probably died in the 1880s.

7. Elizabeth H. Reeves was born about 1825 in Rich Hill, Lancaster Co., South Carolina 9 and died in 1870-1880, at age 45.

General Notes: Middle initial from son's Civil War record. Also confirmed by baptismal record and name on Bethena Reaves's Southern Commission claim for loyalty to the Union. Elizabeth H. Reaves was baptized at Fork Hill Sep. 9, 1839. Dates from the files of Harold S. Blackmon gave birth date as June 17, 1825 and death as May 12, 1897. Cannot prove this. Also, it appears she died before 1880. She was on the 1870 census with W. J. Blackmon, Amanda, Roxanna (step-daughter), Baxter, and Baby (J. T. J.)

Elizabeth married Bynum Jackson Blackmon , son of Elisha Blackmon and Susanah Johnson . Bynum was born in 1823 and died aft 1843 and prob bef 1850.

General Notes: 1850 Census doesn't have Bynum as far as I can tell. B. J. apparently could survey, as he did thus for the Rich Hill and Horton Acres plats in 1843 and 1844.

from the Reeves book:

Bynum is the son of Elisha Blackmon born 1795, Fork Hill, Lancaster Co., SC died 1862, Fork Hill, Lancaster Co., SC and married about 1822 in Fork Hill, Lancaster Co., SC to Susanah Johnson born about 1798 Warren Co., NC died about 1845 Lancaster Co. ,SC. Elisha and Susannah are buried at Fork Hill Baptist Church, Lancaster Co., SC. Also, Bynum is the twin brother of Byrum Blackmon that married Mary Reeves and Mary is the sister of Elizabeth Betsy Reeves.

Bynum is the brother of Susannah Blackmon that married Thomas Jefferson Reeves who is the brother of Elizabeth Betsy Reeves and Mary Reeves.

8. Malissa Caroline Reeves was born on November 15, 1827 in Rich Hill, Lancaster Co., South Carolina and died on July 17, 1895 in Pleasant Hill, Lancaster Co., South Carolina, at age 67.

General Notes: Malissa was given 201 acres by her half-brother James Brady Reeves Jr. When her husband died, she had to fight off the Blackmon family from taking the land. Then she made a big mistake. On Oct. 7, 1878, she married Mr. Silas Ingram. Silas demanded that she put the land in his name. Instead, she put it into her son-in-law, William A. Marshall's, name. Silas tried to make her, make Marshall, give him the land. Malissa refused. They fought and fought until the Fork Hill Church deacons turned it over to the congregation. They, in turn, turned both of them out of the church! Malissa ran Silas off. We have not yet found where Malissa is buried, but it is likely she is buried somewhere on her 201 acres.
-Source: Research of Dora Reeves and Sherry McLemore.
Malissa was baptized at Fork Hill Sep. 10, 1839.

Research Notes: All dates for Malissa come from the James A. Blackmon Bible.

These are scrapa, but they may help document. From the guardianship records of Lancaster Co, SC.

1846, Feb 6: Jonathan D Johnson petitioned 27 Dec 1845 for appointment as guardian and was apponted guardian of Amey E Reeves, Charlotte Ann Bethenia Reeves, and Thomas J Reeves. Bond was secured by Philip T Hammond, William J Connors.

Notes:
Jonathan D Johnston (or Johnson) can be found in Lancaster and Fairfield Counties. He was born about 1814 in SC. Rachel, born ca 1780 in VA, may have been his mother. By 1850 he had removed his family, including Rachel, to Barbour Co, AL. A decree of November 28, 1835, to have the real estate of John H Peake sold led to an auction at which he bought 800 acres on the head waters of Little Lynches Creek for $1,811, adjoining P T Hammond, Dr Irvin, Simon Beckham, and others (Comm. in Equity A, 227). On 12 Aug 1840, "of Fairfield District", he was married to Mrs Mary A Peake of Lancaster District by the Rev Wm F Brasington (Camden Journal 8/22/1840). Mary was the widow of John H Peake. About 1850 he became guardian of three Peake daughters: Martha F, Mary E, and Virginia, who were between 13 and 18 years of age. P T Hammond said: "Johnson is moral, sober, & religious man & is comfortable in his estate & means, very solvent & will no doubt continue so." There is a record of 20 June 1850 showing Jonathan D. Johnson, guardian, petitioning to remove funds, "appointed guardian in Alabama". At about the same time there was a suit J D Johnson vs A M Caston et al about which no more has been learned.

Philip T Hammond, guardian of Amey E Reeves, Thos J Reeves, and Charlotte Ann Bethenia Reeves, replaced Jonathan D Johnson as guardian. Transferred 11 July 1850. On 5 Jan 1857, a final return for Amey E Reeves now wife of Wm W Baskin (signed by W W Baskin). In 1858 Thos J Reeves receipted guardian P T Hammond for money from estate of "my father" James Reeves dec'd. Final return made March 1863 for Thos J Reeves. Charlotte Ann Bethenia Reeves became wife of James A Grigsby (receipt from Charlotte Grigsby 24 Dec 1863; from James A Grigsby and C A Grigsby 4 Feb 1864). One expense was for Amey E Reeves on 9 June 1850, to A M Alexander, for daguerreotype, $2.00. Other expenses for her that date included traveling expenses from college. Some payments to Bethenia Reeves in 1850s.

1858-62:
James B Reeves trustee of Mrs Judy Ellis.
Court decreed in 1858, alimony from W W Ellis
1859: Trustee bought 103 acres from Jno S Croxton
1859-1862, payments from W W Ellis or his representative.

From Mrs. Gardner:
I was not able to fine Amy Ella Reeves Baskins obituary. The Lancaster News had the month of February 1917 but there was not any for the month of December.

Mr. David Baskins, grandson of Robert Lee Baskins took headstones of William Ward and Amy Ella Reeves Baskins home to make a print of them in the Summer of 2007. Mr. David Baskins has done some research on the Baskins and has collected information about their family.

Included in this information:
"I am told that both William and Ella were formally educated and that he taught the school in that area. In those days, it was not uncommon for doctors to administer hat-forming drugs for pain. This probably was the way Ella became addicted to the drug which caused some of her children to be affected - mentally and physically. Those of her children who escaped the effects of her addiction married and had families, and some still live on the land James Baskin deeded to his son, William Ward Baskins. William died in 1894 and is buried in the Baskins cemetery in the Rich Hill Community. Ella died in 1917."

General Notes: James A. Grigsby Dead
Camden Chronicle
March 2, 1923

Well Known Citizen of Near Blaney Expired Suddenly Saturday
James A. Grigsby, well known farmer of upper Richland was found dead in the barn lot of his home Saturday morning by his grandson, Bryan Grigsby. Medical aide was quickly summoned but life seemed to have been extinct when the body was found, death having come apparently without warning.
Mr Grigsby, who was 82 years of age, was twice married; his first wife, Miss Lottie Reeves of Lancaster, having died 32 years ago. His second wife, who was Miss Annie Baxter of upper Richland survives as do the following daughters and sons: Mrs John Amos, Columbia, Mrs Paul Hemmings and Mrs Max Lowe of Wellborn FL, Mrs John Kelly of Blaney, J. T. Grigsby of Columbia, Dr. W. D. Grigsby, Blaney and J.M. Grigsby of Richland county.
Mr Grigsby was a Confederate veteran and for years had held a prominent place in the various activities of this section. He was widely known and the announcement of his death will bring sorrow to his many friends.
The above is from the Columbia State of Sunday morning. While Mr Grigsby resided on the line of Kershaw and Richland, he voted and claimed Kershaw county as his residence. He lived in the Harmony section about 6 miles northwest of Blaney. Mr Grigsby was at one time county school commissioner, before the office was changed to superintendent of education.
