Attempted Assassination.
Buchanan Banner.
Monday morning, a few moments after 11 o'clock, as Mr. W. J. Reeves, of Bremen, was on his way home, from his mill, and just after crossing a fence in the field, was fired upon by an assassin, who was concealed in a thicket only a few feet from the trail in which Mr. Reeves was wlaking. He was fortunately unhurt, and turned quickly, fired with shot-gun at the assassin, but being excited missed him. Mr. Cheney and others went back with Mr. Reeves to the place where the shooting was done, and found that every arrangement had been amde for concealment, and that a narrow trail through the brush had been cut from the place of concealment to where Mr. Reeves had to cross the fence and to the path he was walking in, which was only eleven steps. Tuesday Mr. Reeves swore out a warrant for Mr. John Cash, but the sheriff failed to find him.

Mr. J. M. He was about 63 years of age and leaves a wife and six children. He had been confined to his home for several months. His remains were taken to Rock Hill yesterday for interment.

This must be the right person. Even though, the informant of Esther's Death was "J. M. Richardson," and it listed her as married. J. M. listed as informant was probably her son.
A birth record for a Jack Bryan Richardson, born Jan. 18, 1898 in Rock Hill, SC, gives parents names as James Mason Richardson, deceased at 63, born in Union Co., NC, and Effie Evans age 69 at last birthday, living on Chesterfield Ave., Lancaster, SC.
James, Esthe are probably all buried in the Laurelwood Cemetery or the other two which are part of the Rock Hill Cemetery system. The records were destroyed in the 1910s, and until the 1940's or so, the records were not kept well, if at all.

The Lancaster Enterprise - May 31, 1899
Death of Mr. T. C. Reeves.
Mr. Thos. C. Reeves, formerly of Lancaster county, died suddenly at his home on the old Gay place near Bethel church in Kershaw county, the evening of the 24th (?last) while at work in his field. His remains were interred in the old Laurel Hill graveyard just above Kershaw Thursday afternoon, 25th inst., the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Jabez Ferris, pastor of the Kershaw Baptist Church.
T. C. Reeves was born May 8, 1840. He volunteered in company H., Second South Carolina regiment in May 1861 and went through all the war and surrendered at Greensboro, N. C. He was wounded twice, once at Chicamauga, and received his second wound at Little Charlestown, Va. He belonged to the colorguard. The color sergeant was killed in battle and he caught up the colors and the staff was shot off just above his hand. He caught the colors before they fell and received a severe wound in his side. He delivered the colors to Colonel Wallace and was carried off the battle field. He has suffered a great deal since from the wound. He was a good, kind hearted, moral man and was liked by all who knew him. He was a son of the late James B. Reeves. He leaves surviving him a wife, one son three brothers and a sister. He joined the Baptist church before the war and has lived a consistent member ever since. We hope to meet him on the other side of the river under the shade of the tree.

Death of Mrs. A. J. Ellis
Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis, wife of Mr. A. J. Ellis of the Oakhurst section, died last Friday night and was buried Sunday at Fork Hill church, the Rev. R. J. Blackmon conducting the funeral services. Mrs. Ellis was a daughter of the late J. B. Reeves and was about 63 years of age. She was a consistent member of the Flint Hill Baptist church. Besides her husband she is survived by six children, three sons and three daughters.
She was living in her fathers househod listed as Elizabeth Reaves in 1870. Her husband "J. Ellis" was living next door in the Caston house along with Elizabeth's sister Jane Reaves, age 18. This does not quite fit with the first two children's dates.
Daughter's delayed birth record says mother was about 68 years old at death.

The Lancaster News December 5, 1916
The death of Mr. John J. Reeves, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Minor Vincent at Kershaw, November 20, brought sadness to a large circle of reletives and friends. Mr. Reeves, who was in his 73rd year at the time of his death, had seemed to be remarkably vigorous for one his age till shortly before his last illness. He had been for many years a member of the Baptist Church and was a veteran in the War of Secession. He rarely missed a reunion, county, State or National, and was never happier than when enjoying the companionship of his old comrades in arms. Interment took place at Fork Hill Baptist Church the day following his death. The funeral being preached by his pastor, Dr. J.W.H. Dyches. Mr. Reeves is survived by three sons, Erasmus Reeves, James A Reeves, Oscar Reeves, and three daughters as follows: Mesdames Minor Vincent, Samual Vincent, and Grover Horton.
According to James Boyd, grandson on Sidney Reeves, son of Erasmus Reeves:
John was wounded at Gettysburg. My grandfather said he was shot in the back of the heel. They always kidded him that he must have been running from the Yankees to get shot there. He would get mad and said that he was chasing a yankee around a barn and the yankee overtook him. My grandfather said John was a dentist although he had no training to do this. He was probably someone people just came to to get teeth pulled.
The Lancaster News, July 1, 1913 mentions that John J. Rives went to attend a Great Reunion for survivors of Gettysburg.
The Lancaster News, July 7, 1914
Mr. J. J. Reeves, who has been spending some time in North Carolina, is at home again.

John married Rebecca Jane Cole in 1865. Rebecca was born on April 26, 1844 in Lancaster Co., South Carolina 6, died on August 13, 1909 in Lancaster Co., South Carolina, at age 65 6, and was buried on August 14, 1909 in Fork Hill Cemetery, Lancaster Co., South Carolina.

Checking the General Index to Real Estate Conveyances---Brevard County, Fla.---Grantors, I find that in 1901 LaGrange Cemetery (by Trs) deeded to J B. Chamberlain Lot 38 in LaGrange Cemetery. The deed is recorded in Book KK on page 52. There is an attempt by a dedicated few to reconstruct the records of this cemetery. According to the reconstructed records, those buried in Lot 38 are George F. Duren (1859-1935), George Foy Duren (1899-1990) and Julia Alice Duren (1863-1947). Are you aware of a connection between the Champerlain and Duren families? Since the lots in this section of the cemetery usually contain six graves it is quite possible that J.B., his wife and mother-in-law are buried in the other three unmarked graves.

General Notes: Like her husband who was three years her senior, Sallie was born during President Franklin Pierce's administration. She lived in the Rich Hill Community of Lancaster County, S.C. Sallie attended the Rich Hill Elementary School. Although we know that her major occupation was that of homemaker and mother, we must not allow ourselves to forget that during her brief lifetime (1856-1889), the occupation required functions that were very laborious and time consuming and which are no longer part of being a homemaker and mother. For example, preparing for a meal was not as simple as we may think it is today. Firewood had to be brought into the kitchen and placed in the cook stove; water for meals and bathing was carried into the house in buckets - either from the well or a nearby spring; each summer and fall, fruits and vegetables were hand harvested, then cleaned and prepared for canning which required hours of cooking over a hot stove in an already hot, humid kitchen. Twice daily the homemaker often helped care for and feed the domestic animals - chickens, hogs, and cows - which provided the family with eggs, meat, and milk that were used daily. The family's clothing needs were filled by the homemaker who designed and sewed the dresses, shirts, pants, etc., which the family needed, and then she had to keep them in good repair. Laundering was no simple matter either. All of these activities were just part of the required work that necessitated mothers getting up before dawn. We can well imagine that a welcomed relief was briefly experienced when any holiday or Sunday approached as the routine hard labor slowed down; however, we know that for homemakers the labor didn't stop, but usually required more cooking than normal over the hot, wood, cookstove. Because survival was a fulltime job, with the exception of perhaps religious activities, adults had few leisure-time interests and activities that were merely pleasure oriented. At the time of her early death, Sallie was kept busy providing a loving home for five small children. Sallie was a member of the Baptist church.

General Notes: Bob was born when Franklin Pierce was serving as the 14th U.S. President. He was only a small boy of seven when the Civil War erupted and was about twelve at its end. Being his parents' oldest child and a son, too; we can be sure that Bob served in a role of responsibility at home while his father was away serving in that conflict. Bob lived in the Flint Ridge Community as a youngster and attended the Flint Ridge Elementary School in Lancaster County, S.C. During part of his later life, he lived in the Kershaw area. He was a farmer and a firm believer in hard work, according to family members who remember him. As the requirements of his time necessitated, he was always out of bed before dawn ready for his day's work which included among many other things, the feeding of the cattle and horses at the barn, or (depending upon the season), he plowed, planted, or harvested acres of crops - perhaps some for his family's use and some for the market. Fences had to be mended, out buildings required constant maintenance as did the home; broken farm equipment called for his mechanical skills, and the normal operation of the farm required his keen managerial ability. In his later years, Bob had become self-educated in agricultural laws and also served as president of the former People's Bank of Kershaw. He was a Mason, and in religious faith, a Baptist. It was he who donated the land for the Center Grove Baptist Church, and he became one of its charter members.
